The future of State Street begins here

The Life on State Implementation Plan, initiated by Salt Lake City, is focused on promoting economic development, improving transportation options, and addressing specific safety measures along the five mile stretch of State Street between North Temple and 3300 South. Construction on the safety and beautification upgrades on State Street, between 600 South and 800 South, are scheduled to be completed by Fall 2024.

The section of the plan between 600 South to 800 South is the first in a series of planned improvements on the State Street corridor. Salt Lake City is excited to bring expanded walkways and street landscaping to this section of State Street.

Project Overview

Construction has resumed on the Life on State project between 600 South and 800 South and will continue through the fall. This project will bring improved pedestrian features, beautification elements and safety improvements to this section of State Street.

The section of this improvement project between 600 S. and 700 S. will feature

  • New landscaped medians

  • Wider pedestrian walkways

  • New @RideUTA bus shelters

  • New public art features

  • A signalized mid-block crosswalk between 700 - 600 South

Life on State Project Completion Update

The work between 600 South and 800 South is starting to come to an end.

This project was designed to beautify this area of State St. and make it more pedestrian and bike friendly. New sidewalks, landscaping, paving, underground lines to operate pedestrian crossing and more!

Benefits from Life on State Project:

Trees - The number of trees including medians & sidewalks is 41! This project was able to increase the number of trees put in due to the landscaping crews using soil cells to plant the trees. Soil cells are like comfy little homes for tree roots, allowing them room to grow underneath the newly poured sidewalk.

Public Art - This project will also feature neon art pieces created by Utah artists. For a sneak peek check out this post from Salt Lake Public Art on Instagram! Public art is anticipated to be installed over the winter months.

Pedestrian Friendly - This project improved active transportation with widened sidewalks and boulder seating. Bike racks and a midblock pedestrian crossing are anticipated to be installed in incoming months.

A big THANK YOU to the area residents and businesses for your patience during this construction.

Crews will still be in the area in the coming weeks and months to add final touches and tidy up the work zone. Crews will return in Spring 2025 to complete minor activities on the southwest corner of 600 South.
